Typically, their maximum group size is 6 people in countries with primarily forest birding, or 8 people in more open countries where the birds are easier to see. Despite their surprisingly small group sizes, their prices are competitive. However, quality is of paramount importance to Birding Ecotours, who prefer to use superior accommodation and vehicles: they do not aim specifically to be the least expensive. Despite this, their prices are almost always competitive, even though they strive primarily for better quality. It is Birding Ecotours company policy to contribute 10 % or more of profits to conservation and local communities. They disagree with the view that the central aim of any company should be profits – to Birding Ecotours, running a birding tour company is about doing what they are passionate about (birding!) and also about leaving a legacy – by genuinely helping people and conserving birds, for generations to come. Over the 12 + years they’ve been in business, they’ve contributed a great deal to these causes. Birding Ecotours likes to do things differently. Their dynamic team is constantly innovating. For example, they offer some unique tours, including bird Sound Recording tours, Owls of the World® Tours, tough mammal tours and more. They lead the way in the birding tour industry. What is one of their typical birding tours like? Their main focus is of course on finding the important birds (especially the endemics and specials). Their trip lists are top-notch (do look at their online trip lists and compare them with those of other companies). However, they understand that birding tours can be tiring, so they prefer to add a day or two, rather than to knock everyone completely out by rushing all the way through. This also gives back-up-time in case some birds don’t cooperate as expected, and also gives time to stop for mammals and other interesting things along the way. They also run a lot of Birding Photo Tours, which need a different approach to a typical birding tour – more space in the vehicles for camera gear, the correct pace to get photos (not just visuals), angling the vehicle correctly (when not on foot) and loads of other considerations are important here. They have four offices, one in the USA (headed up by Carlos Sanchez in Florida), another in Peru (led by Eduardo Ormaeche), one in Namibia (Nik Buys) and the final one in South Africa (with Chris Lotz and a good number of others based there). Overall, Birding Ecotours have an extremely strong presence in Australia, Africa, South America, North America, Europe and Asia, and they sometimes arrange cruises to Antarctica and the Arctic.
